Bar Chat | Stain Shade
A quick drink at the bar with...
The collaborator behind our new Far Out Collection, London dye-house Stain Shade, stopped by the Beat Hotel bar to share what makes them tick.
Dipping and dyeing for brands from Clarks to Carharrt, Stain Shade hand dyes every garment individually, making each one unique.
Welcome to the Beat Hotel Bar.
Firstly, what are you drinking?
I like bitter drinks, so a classic negroni, a dirty vodka martini or – if it’s earlier in the day – I love spicy Bloody Mary.
Tell us the story of Stain Shade?
Stain Shade was really born out of my interest in the actual process of dyeing and how you change the colour of fabric. I wanted to find this out from a point of personal curiosity – it was never to start a brand. Stain Shade grew out of this and I was fortunate to have some good relationships with different brands and stores and leveraged these to do some cool things and get some interesting projects off the ground. We have always and will continue to dye everything by hand in our back garden in south London.

What’s the most experimental thing you’ve done this year?
Me and my friend Nikjoo.co.uk built and dyed a birch chair.
What inspires you?
I have always loved reggae and dancehall music and I have always been a fan of people like Tenor Saw and Peter Tosh. Both of their lives were shrouded in quite a lot of mystery with them both dying or being murdered young, in suspicious circumstances. Their contribution to modern reggae and dancehall is unparalleled. They were on the very ground floor of a sound that had previously never existed.

What would your essential hotel after-party record be?
Peter Tosh – I Am That I Am.
What will we see from Stain Shade next?
Who knows!!! These times are pretty scary but as long as we can keep dyeing stuff and working on fun and interesting projects that’s all we can do.
