A quick drink at the bar with...

Beat Hotel firm favourite HAAi stopped for a quick drink with us in The Bar.

We caught up with the Radical New Theory label founder on the important things in life over a metaphorical cocktail…

HAAi - Beat Hotel Bar - Interview

First things first, what are you drinking?
I’ll be drinking a Penicillin. My fave cocktail for a very long time. Very medicinal tasting.
2 ounces blended scotch
3/4 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed
3/4 ounce honey-ginger syrup
1/4 ounce Islay single malt scotch
Garnish: candied ginger

When was the last time you went out for a drink alone?
Pre pandemic I used to do this once or twice a month. I really enjoy solitude sometimes. Especially if I’m going out to have some solo cocktails or a good natty wine.

Seat at the bar or a quiet table in the corner?
Always at the bar.

Who is playing in your ideal hotel bar?
I would say Toshio Matsuura. I actually did a radio show with him for Worldwide FM in a hotel lobby in Tokyo a couple years ago. It was really the perfect setting. His music is excellent.

What song or album has got you through 2020?
The Durutti Column ‘Return Of The Durutti Column’. I think this is such a nice chilled album to listen to, for any mood.

What makes a good bar great?
I think lighting and scent are really important to me. Low lighting helps with the mood of a bar so much. Also having a nice scent to a place can make it feel really nostalgic and memorable. As well as excellent cocktails and a good wine selection.

Do you ever strike up conversation with strangers?
Hmmm, kinda. I’m friendly and like a bit of banter, but also you can get into some awkward chats sometimes. Depends on the sitch really…

What’s your preferred bar snack?
Olives n nuts are always a goody.I love those apple green nocerella olives so much. They all kinda go with any drink in my opinion.

What would be your first record for a hotel room after party?
Air – ‘Sexy Boy’. It’s always a vibe.

Besides the one you’re in for this interview, do you have a favourite hotel you’d like to go back to soon?
I stayed in this crazy place in Ubud in Bali over xmas last year called the Como Shambala. Was one of the most incredible places I’ve ever stayed. Crazy.
